Snow Storm Kicks Off the Winter of 2009-2010
By: Kaitlyn EllisWinter has officially begun and even earlier than the usual. A snow storm swept through the region this weekend. Snow fall was quick and heavy and temperatures were right around the freezing point (32 degrees Ferenheit) . The lower parts of the tri-state received anywhere from three to ten inches of snow while the higher elevations in places like Beckley got nearly two feet!
Due to power lines down and transformers blown, several homes in the tri-state were or still are without power, heat, or water. Some don’t even have phone access. American Electric Power (AEP) has brought in several workers from out-of-state to help with the issues. Even with all the help, some families are not expecting power until Christmas Eve. It just might be a candle lit Christmas this year.
Although the storm caused power lines and trees to fall and electricity to go out, families enjoyed the snow. Children and adults alike went outside to build snowmen and have snowball fights.
