POINT PLEASANT — The bill to remove former Sheriff David L. Anthony from office has arrived and been paid by the Mason County Commission.

The county ended up paying around $10,000 to law firm Harris and Holmes out of Ripley which handled the commission’s request to begin removal procedures against Anthony. The county voted to begin this procedure in early January, shortly before Anthony was indicted by a grand jury on multiple counts. The saga to remove Anthony continued up until he agreed to a plea bargain in March and the commission agreed to stop the removal process.

This means for about two months of work, attorneys billed the county $10,000. Due to Anthony accepting a plea agreement, there is no way for the county to recoup those funds. Anthony’s sentencing on that plea agreement has been continued to May 21 in Mason County Circuit Court.

POINT PLEASANT — Former Sheriff David L. Anthony has been sentenced to 18 months in jail.

Anthony appeared before Judge David Nibert on Monday for his sentencing in Mason County Circuit Court which had been continued from earlier in the month. The continuance was granted when Anthony failed to provide the court with a written apology to residents and office holders in Mason County which he agreed to in his plea bargain.

At that hearing earlier this month, Anthony’s Attorney David Moye took responsibility for the apology not being available in writing, saying he had advised Anthony to verbally go on the record with the apology during the court proceedings as opposed to writing the apology.

POINT PLEASANT — The ongoing case of Cameron Moffett allegedly abusing 11-year old Zachary Plants continues and another suit is now involved, this time against the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR).

Attorney Mike Clifford, who is representing the Plants family in a federal lawsuit against Moffett and the Mason County School Board, stated on behalf of the family that a protest and grievance has been filed against the DHHR. This suit is in response to a leaked investigative report from the DHHR claiming there was not sufficient evidence to convict Moffett of child abuse. The report surfaced on several media outlets out of Charleston and described Plants’ version of the incident, as well as the statements from the teachers who witnessed the alleged abuse and statements from Superintendent Suzanne Dickens. It was reported this report was not to be made public.
