Breaking news: Suspect apprehended in Gonzalez murder

Public tips prompt arrest in Gallia County



GALLIPOLIS — The Mason County Detachment of the West Virginia State Police now has a suspect in custody following the recent murder of Gallipolis Ferry resident Rene A. Gonzalez thanks to tips provided by the public, according to Detachment Commander Sgt. E. B. Starcher.

“The state police obtained further leads on the investigation of Rene Gonzalez’s murder and through the investigation of these leads, we obtained information that lead us to Gallipolis, Ohio. We contacted the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office, who, in turn, assisted us in a search warrant in Gallia County which lead to the arrest of Steven Lee Adkins, Jr.,” Starcher said and further praised the officers of the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office in their assistance in apprehending the suspect.

Adkins, 25, Gallipolis, was arrested by deputies with the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office during the early morning hours on Friday following a search of a residence in the town of Eureka in Clay Township, Gallia County.

Adkins was brought in for questioning and is currently being held in the Gallia County Jail without bond. He is facing a first degree murder charge in Mason County.

Gonzalez’s body was found at approximately 3:10 a.m. on July 11 near the front of his residence located on Huntington Road in Mason County. The victim died of multiple gun shot wounds.

The case remains under investigation, and Starcher indicated that further arrests may be made in this case.
