POINT PLEASANT - Finding that he was not afforded the opportunity of a pre-disciplinary hearing as required by state law, a judge has reversed a civil service panel's decision upholding the termination of a Mason County sheriff's deputy.

Judge Thomas C. Evans III ruled that the county Deputy Sheriff's Civil Service Commission erred in affirming Sheriff David Anthony II's decision firing Robert H. Glenn earlier this year. In his Dec. 8 order, Evans said the state Supreme Court made clear in a 2009 decision that prior to taking any disciplinary action, especially termination, against a deputy, the sheriff is duty bound to provide him or her a hearing prior to the case going before the Commission.

"The Court finds Appellant [Glenn] was denied his statutory right to notice of a pre-disciplinary hearing under W. Va. Code �7-14C-3," Evans said in his ruling.

GALLIPOLIS FERRY, W.Va. — After two days of careful excavation surrounding the area where human remains were found in Mason Co., W.Va., over the weekend, investigators with the West Virginia State Police Crime Scene Team have confirmed that two bodies were found on site and have been identified as Tonda (McCarty) Nelson and Ashley (Baird) Crawford. According to officials, the two women, along with Crawford’s husband William “Jeff” Crawford, have been missing since June 17, 2011. Mr. Crawford’s whereabouts are still unknown.

“We are now dealing with a homicide investigation,” said Sgt. E.B. Starcher of the Mason County Detachment of the West Virginia State Police.

Investigators have also released that the remote site where the two women were found is owned by a family member of Matthew Woods. Woods, also of Gallipolis Ferry, was arrested Friday on charges of first degree murder in the shooting death of Rene A. Gonzalez. As of press time, investigators say the two cases are not connected.

Starcher reported Sunday that the human remains of at least one person had been found that evening, around 8:30 p.m., just off of Duncan Creek Road in Gallipolis Ferry. From that time, until the early morning arrival of forensic specialists on Tuesday, the West Virginia State Police Crime Scene Team closed the road to traffic and secured the site of the shallow grave that had been discovered by a group of people walking through the woods.

Forensic specialists from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., arrived on site Tuesday morning to help state police process the scene. They have since completed the work of processing the Duncan Creek scene.

Mystery has shrouded the case since the trio’s disappearance, and known details seem to only lead to more questions. The Crawfords’ mobile home located on Jeffers Ridge in Southside, W.Va. was destroyed by what investigators called a “suspicious” fire in the early hours of June 17. A few days later, family members reported the couple missing, and Nelson was reported missing shortly afterward — she was said to have been last seen with Ashley around June 16. The Crawfords’ vehicle, which was reportedly located in Mason County by investigators, has been impounded by the sheriff’s office.

Investigators had considered various scenarios before Sunday’s grim discovery and Tuesday’s confirmed identification of Crawford and Nelson, including the trio hiding out from some unknown danger or the trio starting a new life, based on initial reports from family and friends who say the Crawfords had expressed a desire to leave the area and move south, possibly to South Carolina or Alabama. It is now known that foul play was certainly involved in the disappearances; what isn’t known is the whereabouts of the third missing individual — William “Jeff” Crawford. Investigators report that no cell phone or bank activity has been detected since the three vanished.

The family of Jeff Crawford, whose 29th birthday was June 29, has been circulating a Facebook post asking that anyone with information on Jeff contact them anonymously with their information or tips at P.O. Box 73, Point Pleasant, W.Va., 25550.

The West Virginia State Police is leading the investigation of the deaths of Nelson and Crawford, as well as the ongoing search for William “Jeff” Crawford. Anyone with information may contact them at (304) 675-0850.

POINT PLEASANT — Preliminary hearings have now been set for the three suspects involved in the Rene A. Gonzalez murder case.

Steven L. Adkins, Jr., 25, of Gallipolis, Ohio, who was arrested by deputies with the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office on July 22, is the alleged shooter in the Gonzalez murder. According to officials with the Gallipolis Municipal Court, Adkins, who was wanted in Mason County, W.Va., for murder, is being charged as a fugitive from justice.

Adkins appeared in municipal court on Monday. According to court officials, Adkins did not waive extradition and requested a preliminary hearing, which has been set for Thursday at 10:15 a.m. He is currently being held in the Gallia County Jail under a $100,000 cash bond.

The other two suspects, Chad W. McCallister, 29, of Apple Grove, and Matthew C. Woods, 24, of Gallipolis Ferry, are being charged with first degree murder. Preliminary hearings in both Woods’ and McCallister’s cases have been set for Friday morning at the Mason County Magistrate Court.

McCallister and Woods were arrested by the Mason County Detachment of the West Virginia State Police on July 22 and were taken to the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville.

During the early morning hours of July 11, Gonzalez’s body was found near the front of his residence, located on Huntington Road in Gallipolis Ferry. He died of multiple gunshot wounds.

According to criminal complaints filed against Woods and McCallister in the Mason County Magistrate’s Office, the three men were together at McCallister’s Apple Grove residence on or around July 11, where the men allegedly discussed, planned and entered into a conspiracy to rob Gonzalez at his residence. Woods allegedly drove Adkins from McCallister’s home to the victim’s residence with the intent to carry out the planned robbery. Upon arrival, however, Adkins allegedly shot the victim twice, after which Adkins and Woods fled the scene and returned to McCallister’s home.

Woods and McCallister are currently being held at the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville. Their respective bond amounts were not available as off press time.

SOUTHSIDE, W.Va. — The mystery surrounding the disappearances of three people in Mason County has caused anguish for families, an official police investigation and a grassroots movement to assist in solving the case.

Mason County Sheriff David Anthony confirms husband and wife William “Jeff” and Ashley (Baird) Crawford, as well as Ashley’s cousin Tonda (McCarty) Nelson, have been missing since around June 17 and remain missing persons. The Mason County Sheriff’s Office continues to follow up on several leads to solve the case with Anthony explaining there are “a lot of rumors floating around about the case but no factual evidence to prove where they are.” Deputy T. Powell is the lead investigator on the case.

Where they are remains the big question. What is known is the Crawford’s mobile home located on Jeffers Ridge in Southside, W.Va. was destroyed by what investigators called a “suspicious” fire in the early hours of June 17. A few days later family members reported the couple missing, Nelson was reported missing shortly afterwards — she was said to have been last seen with Ashley around June 16. However, family and friends have obviously become concerned these plans to move were foiled because no one has heard from the Crawfords or Nelson since their disappearances. Jeff’s mother reportedly told the sheriff’s office her son had changed his mind about leaving which has only deepened the mystery as to the trio’s whereabouts.

In addition to the investigation being conducted by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, family members have also begun a grassroots campaign to assist in finding answers to the whereabouts of their loved ones, using flyers and Facebook.

The family of Nelson, 27, has flyers on Facebook which describe her as a “mother of three, 5’ 6” tall, 135 pounds, blond hair, blue eyes, last seen with Ashley.” The flyer asks those with information to contact Connie and Johnny McCarty, 304-675-1351.

The family of Jeff Crawford, whose 29th birthday was June 29, has been circulating a Facebook post asking that anyone with information on Jeff, Ashley (who is 26 years old) or Tonda can contact them anonymously with their information or tips at PO Box 73, Point Pleasant, WV, 25550.

Of course the Mason County Sheriff’s Office remains the lead, official investigative body in this case and personnel are also asking the public call them with information and/or leads at 304-675-0850.

Charges filed in alleged “Murder for hire”

UNDATED — Details surrounding the recent shooting death of Rene A. Gonzalez of Gallipolis Ferry emerged throughout the day on Friday as officers made three arrests in a case described by investigators with the Mason County Detachment of the West Virginia State Police as a “murder for hire.”

In the early morning hours on Friday, deputies with the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office arrested Steven L. Adkins, Jr., 25, Gallipolis, at a residence in the town of Eureka, Clay Township, Gallia County.

Adkins, who was described by officials as the alleged “shooter” was brought in for questioning by detectives and is currently being held in the Gallia County Jail without bond.

Chad W. McCallister, 29, Apple Grove, and Matthew C. Woods, 24, Gallipolis Ferry, were later arrested on Friday following further investigation by the Mason County Detachment. McCallister and Woods are currently being held in the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville. All three suspects are being charged with first degree murder.

Gonzalez’s body was found at approximately 3:10 a.m. on July 11 near the front of his residence located on Huntington Road in Gallipolis Ferry. The victim died of multiple gun shot wounds.

According to Detachment Commander Sgt. E. B. Starcher, McCallister allegedly hired Woods and Adkins to beat and rob the victim — a beating that turned into homicide.

“The more we worked the case, the more information we received. ... and that lead us to the conclusion that Chad McCallister had a beef with the victim due to a [previous] altercation. ... Chad got Woods and Adkins to go rob and beat the subject up, and that, in turn, lead to a homicide,” Starcher said.

The Mason County Detachment took the lead on the case Tuesday, and during a press conference on Wednesday, the state police asked for assistance from the public in identifying a “vehicle of interest” that would help them gather further information about the case — information that later aided in the apprehension of the three suspects. According to Starcher, investigators are no longer seeking information regarding this vehicle.

Officials have not released further details on a motive surrounding the murder, and, although lead investigator Cpl. B. L. Keefer described Gonzalez as a person involved in the “drug world” during Wednesday’s press conference, he emphasized that the victim’s criminal history could in no way justify recent events.

“What Mr. Gonzalez did up to this point is what he did,” Keefer said Wednesday. “No one deserved to die the way that Mr. Gonzalez died. Regardless of his vocation, regardless of his history, no one deserved to be murdered.”

After days of intense investigation, Starcher praised the dedication of Keefer and state police investigators, as well as other local law enforcement officials who aided in this case.

“They grabbed this case and they worked hard on it. They worked straight through, and a lot of thanks goes out to the Gallia County Sheriff’s Department,” Starcher said. “The Gallia County Sheriff’s Department was impeccable. They were very crucial to solving this case, as well as the Point Pleasant Police Department and the Mason County Sheriff’s Department. ... All agencies were working together, and we ended up having a good outcome thus far.”

Public tips prompt arrest in Gallia County

GALLIPOLIS — The Mason County Detachment of the West Virginia State Police now has a suspect in custody following the recent murder of Gallipolis Ferry resident Rene A. Gonzalez thanks to tips provided by the public, according to Detachment Commander Sgt. E. B. Starcher.

“The state police obtained further leads on the investigation of Rene Gonzalez’s murder and through the investigation of these leads, we obtained information that lead us to Gallipolis, Ohio. We contacted the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office, who, in turn, assisted us in a search warrant in Gallia County which lead to the arrest of Steven Lee Adkins, Jr.,” Starcher said and further praised the officers of the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office in their assistance in apprehending the suspect.

Adkins, 25, Gallipolis, was arrested by deputies with the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office during the early morning hours on Friday following a search of a residence in the town of Eureka in Clay Township, Gallia County.

Adkins was brought in for questioning and is currently being held in the Gallia County Jail without bond. He is facing a first degree murder charge in Mason County.

The case remains under investigation, and Starcher indicated that further arrests may be made in this case.

W.Va. State Police looking for “vehicle of interest” in Gonzalez murder

WEST COLUMBIA, W.Va. — Troopers with the Mason County Detachment of the West Virginia State Police are on the lookout for a vehicle of interest that may lead investigators to information regarding the shooting death of Rene A. Gonzalez.

During a press conference on Wednesday at the state police facility in West Columbia, Mason County, Corporal B. L. Keefer reported that information about the vehicle is of utmost importance to the investigation as it is believed that the occupant or occupants may be able to provide essential information relating to the case.

“This, I can’t stress enough, is just a vehicle of interest,” Keefer said. “This vehicle or the occupants of this vehicle are not considered suspects at this time. This vehicle was seen, prior to Mr. Gonzalez’s murder, in the area.”

The vehicle, described as a dark-colored passenger car, possibly blue in color, is believed to have been near Gonzalez’s residence on Huntington Road in Gallipolis Ferry just prior to the death of Gonzalez at approximately 12 a.m. on Monday, July 11.

According to Keefer, the car of interest may also have tinted windows, was described as having oval headlights and is believed to be displaying a West Virginia registration plate.

Keefer further reported that witnesses described the vehicle as having an ignition/starter problem, which caused it to emit a high-pitch grinding sound when started. This sound was described as being similar to a vehicle being started when it was previously running.

“In addition to this vehicle information that we are releasing, we’re asking for the public to continue to call in leads, tips, any information as insignificant as it might sound. We are definitely interested in talking to anyone who might have information regarding this murder,” Keefer said.

Gonzalez, who died of multiple gun shot wounds, was found near the front of his residence at approximately 3:10 a.m. on July 11 by a person described as a friend of the victim; and, although, as of Tuesday, the state police are taking the lead on the investigation, the Mason County Sheriff’s Department will still play a role in solving this case, according to Keefer.

“We are still obviously working with the Mason County sheriff’s department in this case. They were the initial responding officers,” Keefer said. “The decision was made yesterday [Tuesday] that with our resources and us being able to scour the state, we would take the lead on this investigation.”

No information in regard to a motive behind the shooting has been released and, while Keefer described the victim as a person involved in the “drug world,” he emphasized that Gonzalez’s criminal history has no direct bearing on the investigation.

“What Mr. Gonzalez did up to this point is what he did,” Keefer said. “No one deserved to die the way that Mr. Gonzalez died. Regardless of his vocation, regardless of his history, no one deserved to be murdered in the manner that he was murdered. At this point, we’re not interested in his drug history unless it directly relates to this murder investigation.”

According to Keefer, currently, the main focus of the investigation is to glean as much information as possible from the public in regard to the shooting — even those individuals who may have otherwise been somehow criminally connected to the victim.

“We are looking to solve this murder,” Keefer said. “We are not going to arrest someone for obviously admitting that they’ve traveled with Mr. Gonzalez, that they’ve bought dope from Mr. Gonzalez. At this point, our investigation is the murder.”

Anyone with information relating to the vehicle of interest and/or the murder of Gonzalez is urged to contact the Mason County Detachment of the West Virginia State Police at (304) 675-0850.

“A lot the folks that have spoken with us, a lot of them had a lot of respect for Mr. Gonzalez. He was a friend,” Keefer said. “We’re hoping a lot more of those folks will talk with us because we need the public’s help in these type of crimes.”

A candlelight vigil was held in Gonzalez’s memory on Sunday, July 17 at the Krodel Park Pavilion in Point Pleasant. Friends of the victim will hold a second gathering from 6-9 p.m., Saturday, July 23 at the Down Under in Gallipolis. Donations will be accepted to help pay to send Gonzalez home.

Gonzalez, originally from Trinidad, came to the area in the late 1990s and attended the University of Rio Grande in Gallia County on a soccer scholarship.

Memorial service planned to benefit family of deceased

GALLIPOLIS FERRY, W.Va. — As of Tuesday, the West Virginia State Police Department has officially taken over the investigation of a recent murder that took place in Mason County, W.Va., according to Corporal B.L. Keefer.

Rene A. Gonzalez, 43, was found on the porch of his Huntington Road residence near Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va. in the early hours of Monday, July 11, where he had died of apparent multiple gun shot wounds. No arrests have been made in the crime, although officials are following available leads.

A candlelight vigil was held at the Krodel Park Pavilion on Sunday, July 17, in honor of Gonzalez and another memorial gathering will be held Saturday, July 23, from 6-9 p.m. at the Down Under, in Gallipolis. According to friends of the deceased, donations will be accepted to help pay to send Gonzalez home.

Gonzalez is originally from Trinidad and came to the region in the late 1990s on a soccer scholarship to the University of Rio Grande, located in Gallia County, Ohio.

GALLIPOLIS FERRY — A man was found dead on the porch of his residence early Monday morning after an apparent shooting.

The body of Rene A. Gonzalez, 43, was discovered by a friend at approximately 3 a.m. on the porch of his mobile home on Huntington Road, near Gallipolis Ferry.

No arrests have been made, although officials are following available leads. The case is under investigation by the West Virginia State Police and the Mason County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the West Virginia State Police 2009 and 2010 annual reports, the Mason County Detachment has had a slight upward trend in major investigations and calls for service over the two years. In 2009, the detachment received 1,921 calls for service and reported 77 major investigations of incidents and 89 major offense invesigations. In 2010, Mason County received 1,934 calls for service and reported 81 major investigations of incidents and 101 major offense investigations. However, the number of felony arrests have steeply risen from 81 in 2009 to 207 in 2010.

ASHTON, W.Va. — The Hannan boys basketball team opened its season on Tuesday evening with an impressive 72-36 victory over Van.

The host Wildcats took a 19-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, and led 31-21 at the halftime intermission. Hannan scored 21 and 20 in the final two quarters, respectively.

For Hannan, the victory matched last season’s winning total and gave head coach Larry Maynard a victory in his first game back at Hannan.

Senior D.J. Black led the Wildcats with a 32 point outing. Derrick Akers had 11 points, Daniel Reynolds and Jacob Taylor added six points each, Coltin Campbell and Brad Fannin each scored five points, Dakota Campbell had three points, and freshmen Ty Paige and Zach Killingsworth each scored two points."

POINT PLEASANT — Despite public outcry, tolls are back on the table for the finance of U.S. 35.

On Tuesday, the West Virginia Supreme Court justices ruled that the West Virginia Parkways Authority can now proceed with their public hearings for the toll project. The court appealed the Mason County Commission’s rescinded vote, which pulled their support of the project.

Charles Lanham, member of the local U.S. 35 Advisory Council, said that he was pleased with the court’s decision."

POINT PLEASANT — A sea of projects ranging from topics such as chemistry and engineering flooded the National Guard Armory on Tuesday for the Mason County Science Fair.

A total of 106 projects were presented for the Division I portion of the fair. All students who participated in this year’s fair were required to form a hypothesis and conduct an experiment. Participants also had to identify a conclusion.

In addition, students were required to use a visual display and had to present their project in front of a team of judges. Volunteers from the local community served as this year’s judges.

Students competed in 14 different categories, which included: Animal Sciences; Behavioral and Social Sciences; Biochemistry; Cellular and Molecular Biology; Chemistry; Energy and Transportation; Engineering: Electrical and Mechanical; Engineering: Materials and Bioengineering; Environmental Sciences; Mathematical Sciences; Medicine and Health Science; Microbiology; Physics and Astronomy; and Plant Sciences. There was not a separate team category for this year’s fair. Those who competed as teams were grouped in the individual category that pertained to their project."

35 ISSUE WILL IMPACT SOUTHERN MASON COUNTY

TOLLS WILL AFFECT SAFETY

Many Southern Mason County residents are concerned about the Route 35 controversy over toll booths. Residents have expressed concerns that the toll expense could increase traffic, both commercial and non-commercial, on Rt. 2, Jerry’s Run and Ashton-Upland Road.

There has been a perceptible increase in traffic on local roads during the construction phase of the 35 upgrade. Unfortunately the implementations of toll roads will result in many more motorist exploring alternate non-toll roads.

With the economic stress many feel, saving money on unnecessary tolls could be an “easy” savings…. Thus resulting in more traffic on roads not meant for heavier traffic flow.

Thanks to the Mason County Commission for bringing much needed attention to this issue.

Local singer auditions for America’s Got Talent

ASHTON — It’s not everyday that dreams become a reality, but so far for Tyler Sharp, those goals of stardom are now closer in reach as the 21-year old just returned from a trip to New York to audition for America’s Got Talent.

NBC’s top rated summer series searches for acts of all ages, and brings the variety format back to the forefront of American culture by showcasing performers from across the country.

And Sharp had exactly what producers were searching for when they saw his on-line audition of him singing, “The Anchor Holds.”

“I saw an ad on Google calling for YouTube auditions for America’s Got Talent. I already had several videos posted on my YouTube account, so I thought, why not send one in and see what happens,” Sharp said. “They were calling for 90-second videos and mine was over five minutes long. Honestly, until I got the call, I had completely forgotten about submitting the video.”

The call to travel to New York and audition live in front of producers came during the Point Pleasant Big Blacks playoff game. At first, Sharp believed the call from the casting crew was a joke.

“I thought it must have been a joke, but then I knew that I hadn’t told anybody at all that I had submitted the video,” Sharp said. “The guy said he was really impressed with how deep my voice is.”

Sharp was then asked to travel to NYC by either Sunday or Monday of the following week to give the producers a chance to meet with him. “Of course I said yes,” Sharp replied.

Sharp’s live audition was just as exciting, as he talked about being ushered ahead of the crowd gathered to try-out.

“When I got there, we stood in line for a bit. As we approached the registration desk, I handed in the paperwork that the casting producer had emailed me and when they looked at it, they got on their headset and said, “We have a Q Act up front,” Sharp said.

The singer continued to say that he didn’t have to waiting in the main holding area (a large arena), but instead, he and his family was escorted into a back room for all of the Q Acts. Sharp was among 15 other Q Act contestants.

“They told me I could audition whenever I wanted,” Sharp said. “And since I was a Q Act, I was given the opportunity to audition in a room by myself with three producers, rather than in a group of 20.”

The thrilling experience continued when Sharp was asked to sing two songs, and low notes. He first chose Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” and Josh Turner’s, “Long Black Train.”

At the end of the audition, casting producers talked for about 10 minutes after Sharp sang. Then they told him he would be called by March if he was chosen to be on the live show.

“Before they let me go though, a camera crew was called in. They escorted me to the large arena where they introduced me to everyone as “America’s Deepest Voice,”” Sharp said. “Hundreds upon hundreds of contestants were asked to gather behind me as they filmed me saying, “America, I’ve got talent!” in my deepest voice. Then they had the crowd cheer and clap for me in the background. It took about six takes to get it right. It was crazy!”

Back home, Sharp recalled his trip and said the best part has been all of the support and encouragement everyone has been giving him.

“My momma’s face when I came back into the room after auditioning and being filmed was priceless,” Sharp said.

It was about 11 years ago when Sharp began singing at Barton Chapel Church where he currently attends.

“This was around the time my voice started dropping and getting deeper,” Sharp said.

At first, Sharp sang with a group of guys throughout middle school and part of high school called the Faithful 5 around Mason and Putnam Counties. Then he began to sing with his aunt Michelle at different churches around the community. Now, he plays piano at church and sings there each Sunday. He also is invited to sing at other local churches.

Sharp is a 2007 graduate of Hannan High School and is currently a senior at Marshall University where he is majoring in philosophy. He said he has intentions of either pursuing a Ph.D. in the subject or going to law school.
“If singing were to become a real option for me, though, I’d do it in a heartbeat,” Sharp added.
His advice to those hoping to make their dreams come true?

“Even though I’m really in no position to give advice on how to make others dreams come true, I’d say that the best way to get recognized is to put yourself out there, locally and on the Internet,” Sharp said. “YouTube has gotten me attention from nationally touring quartets and from people around the world. That’s the power of YouTube.”

America’s Got Talent, from producers FremantleMedia North America and Simon Cowell’s SYCO Television, returns this summer with the hottest performers from across the country ready to compete in the blockbuster reality show’s fifth season. Howie Mandel (“Deal or No Deal”), one of America’s favorite entertainers, joins returning celebrity judges Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan this season, while actor/producer/comedian Nick Cannon returns as host.

The series is a true celebration of the American spirit, featuring a colorful array of hopeful stars, including singers, dancers, comedians, contortionists, impressionists, jugglers, magicians and ventriloquists, all vying for their chance to strut and perform on stage hoping to win America's hearts -- and the $1 million prize.

ASHTON — Peoples Bancorp Foundation, a non-profit corporation formed to make donations on behalf of Peoples Bank and its family of companies, recently donated a total of $13,500 to 20 area food pantries. And Crosslight of Hope, a Southern Mason County ministry, was presented with $1,000 by local branch managers on Monday.

“This will help us provide food for our clients in their time of need,” Traci Livingston, director of the ministry said. “We are so thankful for Peoples Bank and their contribution.”

Sharon Stapleton, Leigh Ann Baird and Amanda Pearce visited Crosslight on Monday and received a tour of the facility that has been providing much needed household items, clothing, and food for those struggling in the area."

ASHTON — Hannan Jr/Sr High School’s Web Page Publishing Class recently was selected to particpate in a statewide E-Government project.

According to students in the class, the goal of the project is to create and publish a web site that is accessible from the West Virginia state portal (wv.gov) for every county and municipality in the state.

The project requires students to collect certain information and upload it to the Community Connect Foundation’s web site. The class is responsible for Mason County’s municipalities and townships including New Haven, Hartford, Mason and Henderson."

ASHTON — It’s nothing but the net for Derrick Akers, a member of the Class of 2011 at Hannan High School.

A basketball fan and player his whole life, Akers is looking forward to making the most of his final year, especially during this year’s season.

Having played on the Varsity team since his freshman year, Akers said he values everything about the sport.

“I like getting to play with my friends and working as a team. It also gives me something to do.”

Akers, a highly decorated player in the small forward position, was selected for the All-Tournament Basketball Award last year. He also will be one of the co-captain’s this year.

For Akers, basketball has been more than a sport.

“Not only did I become a better player throughout the years, but basketball really taught me to learn how to not get down when we were losing. By being on a team, I’ve learned to work losing situations out and play to the fullest.”

The Wildcats played their best record during Akers first year on the team, but with practice beginning in November, this senior already has goals of averaging 12-15 points per game.

While this is his last year as a Wildcat, Akers has hopes of playing college ball.

“I will definitely miss playing with my teammates,” he said. “Some of us have been together since elementary school. But it would be nice to continue to play.”

Akers will be attending Marshall University next fall to major in criminal justice. He said he wants to get a degree first, then attend a policy academy. He said that maybe later on, he might even try being on a S.W.A.T. team.

“I have a friend who went to the police academy and he really liked it,” Akers said. “And I have always wanted to be a cop, so I plan to get my degree and see where that leads me.”

Akers also said he chose Marshall because it’s close to home.

“My parents have always inspired me to get a good education, and to be a good person, and my future ambition is to accomplish that, have a nice job and live a healthy life.”

Also at HHS, Akers was involved in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and National Honor Society (NHS) during his sophomore-junior year. He said he really enjoyed helping out in community projects with both, especially planting memorial trees at the school as part of FFA. He additionally takes college-credit courses.

ASHTON — An active student and community member, Samantha Mayes of Hannan High School has a passion for helping others.

This 17-year old who played basketball for two years, now enjoys teaching the younger generation skills to play on the court.

“I really enjoy helping kids with learning how to play basketball,” Mayes said. “The best part is seeing the expression on a child’s face when they do something good. It’s a win/win situation for me.”

And while she hasn’t played since her sophomore year, Mayes said being a member of the Lady Cats basketball team was fun. She has coached for the Ashton Buddy League since she was a freshman, and looks forward to this year’s season.

Also during her sophomore year, the senior athlete ran track, competing in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, and the long jump. But now the senior is solely focusing on her education.

“I really enjoy learning new things,” Mayes said about why she likes Hannan. “Hannan is such a great school and I feel as if there is always some type of knowledge to be gained here.”

Two organizations that she has been involved in are Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and the National Honor Society (NHS).

“I have been a member of FBLA for four years, and have served as secretary for the past two years,” Mayes said.

She competes in the public speaking event, and has placed on the state level, taking fifth and sixth places in past competitions. She also is on the desktop publishing team.

“I really like FBLA because I love to travel, make close connections with my teammates, and because I get to be myself,” the senior said.

As part of NHS, Mayes participates in community activities, and helps during graduation ceremonies at the school. She has served as the secretary of the organization during her junior and senior years.

Mayes also has enjoyed taking the stage in several school plays. Just last year, she had the role as Alice in ‘Wonderland Rock’, a spin-off of Alice in Wonderland. She also has been involved in the school plays in her eighth and tenth grade years.

“I like acting because I have a lot of fun,” Mayes said. “I also enjoy getting to be myself and someone else at the same time.”

Point Pleasant (WV) Register - Laps for Life this weekend: "APPLE GROVE — Cancer hits home for many of us, and Kaitlyn Ellis, a junior at Hannan High School, has organized an awareness walk this weekend to help others become aware of its effects on family, friends and the community.

“I previously attended a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar and was encouraged to make a difference in the world,” Ellis said. “When I came back, I knew I wanted to do something in my community to help others.”

Ellis organized the event after her grandfather, Buddy Ellis, passed away in July with prostate cancer. Her grandmother, Peggy Cook, recently finished treatments and surgery for uterine cancer, and currently has no signs of cancer.

“After my papa passed, I decided to use my passion to reach out and help others,” Ellis said. “So many families and friends in my community are afflicted by cancer, so I wanted to give back to them by organizing this cancer walk.”

Laps for Life, held this Saturday at Ashton Elementary, will begin after registration at 9 a.m. Ellis hopes the entire community comes out to support the cause. Shirts will be given to the first 100 walkers, and according to the organizer, there is no registration fee, just strictly donations."

POINT PLEASANT — The 2010 Little Miss and Mister Mason County Fair Royalty was chosen on Monday afternoon.

The pageant, which had a total of 26 contestants, was entertaining as ever as each boy and girl were interviewed on the main stage. At the end of the event, Allison Tennant and Keenan Janicker walked away with the 2010 titles.

Tennant is the 6-year old daughter of Lenny and Jennifer Tennant of New Haven.

Janicker is the 5-year old son of Arnold and Amber Janicker of Ashton.

The Point Pleasant Jr. Women’s Club sponsors the annual event, and the 2010 Point Pleasant Sternwheel Regatta Queen, Devin Cottrill emceed and had the fun and sometimes difficult job of asking each contestant several questions."

Crosslights of Hope a non profit organization on the corner of Ashton Upland Rd in Ashton WV will be holding an open house on Sat June 12th., 12-2pm. This faith-based outreach program will be providing services to southern Mason County. There will be a food pantry and backpacks with food items will be sent home with children on weekends.

Sadly school lunch and breakfast are the most dependable meals that some children get each day. This program will help supplement families and give that hand of hope and help that many need.

The organization will take donations of items and cash. They will be selling desserts during Open House for donations as well as giving a tour of the facility. Kelli Templeton says, this will be a great asset to our community. Templeton will be speaking and invites the public to attend and welcome this much needed organization to the community!

Workers from Bernini Industrial Surface Solutions have been working this week on transforming the flat sheet of concrete behind Hannan into an outdoor basketball court.

It all started with former Basketball Coach Wayne Richardson applying for a grant to help pay for the project.

Workers from the county office came down and leveled the original pad.

It has been five years plus since Hannan has had an outdoor basketball and tennis court. In what used to be known as the Annex buildings,a basketball court with a removable tennis net is being built.

Many students are looking forward to the chance to have someplace in the community where they can go to play a pick-up game.

After our recent collection for Operation Soldier Care, the final tally was 1,146 items for the troops. Today Monday, June 7th, a representative from the organization came and picked up the items.

Items collected include food, books and many other recreational items. He stated that Hannan students, staff and community had done a great thing.

He also said it would not only make the troops overseas happy but it also made him happy. He placed an empty container at the school in the event more donations came into the office.

Hannan High School would like to extend a very large "Thank You!" to Holzer Hospital and Kelly Roush.
Holzer visited Hannan's Campus today to offer free sports physicals.

They performed 70 physicals for current and future Hannan Athletes.

The Kings Island trip will be tomorrow, June 3rd

Students need to be at the school no later than 5:30 a.m. They will be returning around 10 p.m.

The 2010 – 2011 class schedules and grade cards for this past year will be released on June 8th.

Seniors leave final ‘pawprint’ at Hannan

ASHTON — The graduating Class of 2010 left their final “pawprint” as Wildcats during the 81st Commencement held May 29 at Hannan High School.

Before the ceremony began, guests enjoyed a senior slideshow played to the class song, “Don’t Stop Believin.” The gymnasium also was decorated in the class colors of navy blue and silver.

The 32 seniors, proudly dressed in their blue gowns and caps, entered the gymnasium packed full of family, friends, teachers and many supporters.

During their days spent at Hannan Jr./Sr. High School, they experienced many changes, and on this day, they would remember their last day together as the Class of 2010.

After processional to “Pomp and Circumstance” composed by Edward Elgar, the Wildcat seniors recited the “Pledge of Allegiance” led by senior Shawn Kauffer. Following the welcome given by HJSHS Principal Dr. Karen Oldham, vice principal Amy Kammer presented the honor graduates: Katlyn Eugenia Stanley, Megan Jean Adkins, Cindi Ann Adkins, Kayla Rose DeMaria, Derick Jeffery Alan Flora, Kelsi Marie McCarty and Jennifer Lynn Swan. The National Honor Society members rose to be recognized.

Adkins then addressed her classmates with her salutatorian speech in which she recalled the times spent with them and the changes they had gone through together as a class.

She began by saying, “My fellow seniors, we have spent 2,160 days together. We have spent 15,120 hours in school. We have spent a third of our lives together in school. And now it is about to end. But this is not only an end, but a beginning. We must take the time now to remember. Remember that we are the last class to attend the old Hannan High School, the construction and the current Hannan High School.”

Adkins continued by recalling several special moments that the class had experienced together. She also recited one of her favorite quotes by Marianne Williamson and read her own poem she had written, “If Failure Was Impossible.”

“Dreams are coming true today for us and our parents,” Adkins said. “Our teachers and parents no longer have to worry about whether or not we will graduate. Today is a day of success.”

Adkins closed by thanking her parents and Spanish instructor, Senora Gue. She also left a few words for her classmates, “The future is us and no one should fear. Failure is impossible. I know because today is here.”

The valedictory address was then given by Katlyn Stanley who touched on the importance of growing up and going off to college.

“First of all, I’d just like to congratulate all of the graduates for being able to join me today. Most likely, we all have had to face some of the greatest challenges of our lives in this small school in the middle of nowhere,” Stanley said. “We couldn’t have gotten through those challenges without the help of our parents.”

She continued to thank her very own mother for inspiring her.

“In turn, that inspiration has made me see the best in my classmates, no matter how crazy some may seem on the outside. I thank you all for your friendship, support and wisdom throughout our years at Hannan.”

After talking about the change of the school’s structure, classrooms and teachers, Stanley was thankful for all her memories.

“Our school has grown into a school that has become more well-known and at least in my mind, better than any private school that any parent could pay for. No amount of money can buy what we have here at Hannan.”

As she addressed the crowd, the valedictorian encouraged her fellow classmates.

“Our futures are now, more than ever, dependent on us. It’s almost as if for 18 years, we didn’t really think of actually being in control of our lives. We always had our parents,” Adkins continued. “In retrospect, we sort of had a backseat to our own lives, but now we’re driving. But we’ll do. How do I know? Because I know who I’m talking to. I know I’m talking to quite possibly the greatest people I’ve ever known. I’ve seen the best of all of you, and I know that there are no better people to face what’s ahead. And whatever you have chosen to do, I know you’ll do it and you’ll do it well.”

Stanley closed by saying, “Our lives our before us, our past is behind us, but our memories are forever.”

Junior Tuesday Allen then sang “Don’t Forget to Remember Me” and Dr. Oldham presented the Class of 2010 saying, “Always believe, always dream and always remember who you are to become.”

Dr. William Capehart, Superintendent of Mason County Schools, accepted the senior class.

While receiving their diplomas from Capehart and the rest of the Board members, each senior also received a Bible from Ball’s Chapel Church, along with a white rose with a blue tip. They also were presented with a scrapbook of their senior year. Mr. Jim Hadinger read each graduates name.

Afterwards, Jennifer Swan led her class in the crossing of the tassel and each senior left the gymnasium with big smiles on their faces. And together, as the Class of 2010, they embarked on a new chapter in their life by throwing their caps into the sky as the crowd looked on and cheered.

ASHTON — Since January, Cindi Adkins has been learning a new language at Hannan High School — guitar language.
This senior, who is looking forward to graduation, reflects on her years spent at Hannan and said she will miss her good teachers and fun classes.

One of those classes is a guitar class where Adkins and her classmates have learned how to play the stringed-instrument. This class formed five months ago uncovered some talented students including Adkins.

“It really is like learning a new language,” Adkins said. “We actually became pretty advanced players.”

The group of students showcased their newly found talents during a concert held at the school.
“I wasn’t nervous at all,” Adkins said. “More like excited because we played our class song, ‘Don’t Stop Believing.’”

Her love for playing guitar also has Adkins thinking about her future involvement in music programs at HHS. She continued to say that she has thought about the option given to her to come back and assist the guitar instructor next year.

When she isn’t stringing the guitar, this 17-year old stays involved in numerous other school activities including theatre.

Adkins played a large part in the ‘Pride and Prejudice’ play put on by theatre students in 2009. She played the role of the mother in the school’s version of the classic.

As for some of her other classes, this senior has taken many college courses, as well as advanced placement courses. Those classes include English 101 and 102, forensic science, calculus and psychology.

In her forensic science class, Adkins talked about how she got to write a script about the TV show, ‘Bones’.

“It was 30 pages long,” Adkins said. “I have a passion for writing and I was so excited when we received that assignment.”

Also at HHS, Adkins is a former vice-president of the National Honor Society, and a participant in the Math Field Day. She was just recently crowned the high school’s Prom Queen and was voted ‘Class Clown’ by her peers.

“My reaction was ‘Why did you vote me that?’”, Adkins said. “I always thought I was the only one who thought I was funny. I can’t believe other people think that.”

Recently accepted to the University of Charleston, this senior is looking forward to getting her pre-law degree. She also will be taking psychology as a minor.

“I have always wanted to be a lawyer,” Adkins said. “And psychology is very interesting.”
Adkins continued to say that she may pursue fields in law enforcement or criminal justice. But wherever she ends up, she is going to continue writing, just in case she needs a back-up career.
Perhaps it was during her county science fair project that Adkins was intrigued by psychology.
“We did a group project on remembering dreams and we learned from our subjects that men remember emotions more and women remember details,” Adkins said. “We thought teenagers would beat the adults in remembering the most.”

Adkins stated that her hobbies include composing music, making cartoons and album covers on the computer, and collecting TV show series.
“I guess I like watching TV series because I enjoy analyzing the psycho-social relationships of fictional characters on current media shows,” Adkins said.

She is the daughter of Greg and Brenda Adkins of Ashton.

Hannan High School sends a big “Thank You” to our Partners in Education - Pleasant Valley Hospital, for their continued support and donations provided throughout this school year.

PVH most recently donated and installed signs at various spots across campus.

These three signs adorn the outside concession stand, gymnasium and athletic facility.

The Athletic Center houses the exercise equipment donated by PVH earlier this year

The signs uniquely represent HHS and PVH while displaying a different motto for each area. PVH provided and paid for the hanging of each sign.

Vice-Principal Amy Kammer, who has spearheaded many of these projects, says it has truly been a great pleasure working with Amy Leach of Pleasant Valley Hospital. Having PVH as a Partner in Education has proven beneficial to the students, staff and community.

Day in the life — Alesia Green — Ashton Principal thrives in community school

ASHTON — Principals are often viewed as the center of the school as their responsibilities including dealing with students, faculty as well as the building itself.

And Ashton Elementary Principal Alesia Green enjoys all of the responsibilities that her job provides. Green has served as Ashton’s principal since November of 2008. She previously worked at the Mason County Board of Education office as a director. In addition, she served as principal of New Haven Elementary School and worked as a teacher for Point Pleasant High School and Hannan High School.

According to Green, she decided to leave her job at the BOE office because she wanted more hands-on interaction with students and teachers.

“If you’re going to make a difference I feel that you need to be at the school level to see the difference — you can see where you make progress with the kids,” she said.

Green attributed her past teachers as the reason for pursuing a field in education.

“I was really blessed with some excellent teachers when I was in school. As far as becoming a principal, I wanted to try and see if I could have a positive impact on the students, staff and school,” she said. “I need to be positive in this job. There is no way I can expect the teachers to be positive with the kids if I am not that way with them.”

In fact, Green described working with both the students and staff of Ashton Elementary as being her favorite part of the job.

“I enjoy seeing kids and staff walk into the building anticipating the day ahead. I also enjoy when they leave at the end of the day and I can see that they felt good about the day,” she said. “I like seeing them feel like school is a place they get to come to rather than a place that they have to come to.”

Green added that she also enjoys how being a principal enables her to work with all aspects of the school.

“Being principal is interesting because when you are dealing with an entire school you have to see how situations affect everyone involved — staff, children and parents — that can be a challenge,” she said.

She also decribed the general work load as another challnege of her job as principal.

“There is more job than there are hours in the day. When I’m here I shouldn’t be behind a desk doing paperwork, I should be out and about. The challenge is finding a way to balance the work out,” she said, adding that no two days are the same.

According to Green, she arrives well before school starts and usually has questions and tasks to take care of before she even enters the school building.

“I answer questions constantly. You have to think on your feet and make quick decisions with this job. Unexpected things happen that must be taken care of,” she said. “Being a principal is just like managing a home, but instead of managing five people you are managing 450 students and 50 staff members.”

Green also said that she enjoyed working at Ashton Elementary because of the school’s community-oriented atmosphere.

“In this small community the school’s are truly the focus and center of the community. Both Ashton and Hannan are a huge asset to the community,” she added. “There’s absolutely nothing I dislike at this school. This is a great staff with a lot of community support.”

Just as Green has pursued her dream of being a school principal, she encouraged others to pursue the things that they want in life.

“Live true to your convictions. Whatever you feel passionate about, pursue with all your might,” she said.

Hannan Student to Attend Chinese Language Camp

Caleb Shaw.... Headed to China

Caleb Shaw has been accepted by the Confucius Institute at George Mason University to attend the Chinese Bridge Summer Language Camp in Beijing/Henan. Caleb is a student at Hannan Jr./Sr. High School and Mason County Career Center. He is currently enrolled in Chinese III.

Last year Caleb was the only student from West Virginia to attend this camp. The camp provides 30 hours of language and cultural instruction.

The LINKS program will be daily next year and will allow additional parental and community involvement. Two schools received the LINKS grant in Mason County – Point Pleasant and Hannan.

Lynsey Grizzell Wins Young Writer's Contest

One of Hannan’s finest, Lynsey Grizzell, has won the Young Writer’s contest for the division of 7th and 8th grade which was held by the University of Charleston and the State of West Virginia.

Lynsey wrote her short story entitled “The Journey” in Ms. Bush’s 7th grade English class. On May 7th, Lynsey, her parents and Ms. Bush attended the Awards Ceremony and Workshops at the University of Charleston.

We are all very proud of Lynsey and hopes she continues her interest in writing.

In a tightly contested race for the three seats up for grabs, current school board members Teresa Warner and Dale Shobe won reelection. They will be joined by Randy Searls, 4th District, who was the top vote-getter with 1,811 votes.

Warner, 3rd District collected 1,769 votes, while Shobe, 2nd District picked up 1,695 votes. The three will join Mick Cottrill, 1st District and Thomas Nunnery, 3rd District, on the Mason County Board of Education.

The remaining votes for school board were split as follows: Michael L. Roach, 1,201 votes; Donna Sturgeon Duke, 1,185 votes; Cloyd H. Smith, Jr., 620 votes; Devin Slone, 506 votes; Yvonne McCormick, 453 votes; James F. Bowles, 406 votes. Brian E. Reed dropped out of the race, but ended up with 168 votes."

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Joel Weikle — Hannan High School

ASHTON — It’s lights, camera, action for one senior at Hannan High School.

Joel Weikle, a member of the Class of 2010, has a love for theatre. And this passion has brought him many successful roles in high school plays.

This 18-year old first got involved in the theatre department through the instructor Donna Duke.

“Mrs. Duke needed some stage men for a play and so I volunteered to help,” Weikle said. “Then I got to see firsthand how much fun it was and I wanted to try acting.”

From playing roles as the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz in 2008 to the Mad Hatter in Wonderland Rock in 2010, Weikle has enjoyed transforming into characters.

“Each year, the roles I played got more fun,” Weikle said, “but my favorite would be Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice.”

Weikle continued to say that during the 2009 play, he was able to have freedom with the character and completely flipped his roll into a creepy and mysterious Mr. Collins.

Throughout the three years of costume changes and makeup, Weikle says he has learned a lot about himself.

“I honestly think I have learned most of all that I have no idea what my personality is,” Weikle said. “I just enjoy portraying different roles and having a good time with it all.”

One of his favorite senior memories actually deals with a play.

Just recently, several Hannan theatre students presented a short snippet of their play to the Mason County Board of Education members, along with Superintendent Dr. William Capehart.

“I don’t think Dr. Capehart knew was to expect, but he took it really well,” Weikle said. “I think that has to one of my favorite memories; seeing the reaction of the board members.”

Weikle also is thinking about minoring in theatre, but says he really wants to focus on another interest in college.

Having already been accepted to Marshall Community and Technical College, Weikle will attend the school for three years and obtain his degree in radiology.

“Radiology really interests me. There is just so much great technology that allows you to see inside the human body,” Weikle said.

He continued to say that his ultimate goal is to help as many people as possible.

“I have even thought about becoming a doctor, but it all depends on where life takes me,” Weikle added.

But for now, life is taking Weikle through the rest of his senior year at HHS.

During his years spent as Wildcat, Weikle has enjoyed college classes as well as a journalism class.

As a reporter for the “Paw Print,” Weikle takes pictures and conducts interviews throughout the school to find out what’s going on with upcoming events. He also works on the yearbook.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Weikle said.

Weikle also is a former member of the band, where he played trumpet for three years.

“I really love playing music,” Weikle said. “We also had some really neat formations.”

Just recently Weikle got to perform along with his classmates during a concert where he was able to show off his piano skills.

“We really rocked the show,” Weikle said.

He continued to say that the instructor is very talented and that he is very proud of what he has learned from him in just two years.

The concert was performed by Hannan Jr/Sr High School’s band, Ashton Elementary School students and students from the guitar and piano class.

“We have so many talented kids, and the public got to see just what we are learning here at Hannan,” Weikle said.

Another memory that Weikle considers one of his favorites includes the Mountaineer Field Day that was held during Homecoming.

“We (seniors) didn’t win, but we had such a great time,” Weikle said.

He also added that Hannan has been a “great, small school.”

In his community, Weikle participates in 4-H in Putnam County. He has been a member for nearly 13 years and has raised market rabbits.

“It’s easier than raising pigs, but the judging is much harder,” Weikle said.

Weikle’s hobbies include reading, hanging out with friends, and imitating characters such as “Theodore” from Alvin and the Chipmunks.

He is the son of Jason and Cherry Weikle of Milton.

A Black Tie Affair

For the first time in many, many years, Hannan High School is having their prom at the school. Students and teachers are busy as bees preparing the decorations and getting the place spruced up.

The cafeteria is being transformed for the 2010 PROM. Thanks to Bill Cottrell and Point Pleasant High School for offering anything & everything they have to help make Hannan’s Prom special!

The prom will be held in the Commons Area (cafeteria and courtyard) of the school Saturday 8 – 11 P.M.

Pictures will begin at 7 P.M
The Grand March will begin at 7:30 P.M.
Prom begins tomorrow at 8 P.M.
Carriage Rides 8- 11 P.M.

Following pictures, students will be ask to make their way to the gym to begin the Grand March lineup.

During the Grand March, music will be playing and each student and their date will be introduced. It will be a great opportunity for parents and community members to get pictures!

Horse and carriage rides will take place in front of the school. The carriage will seat 6 people at a time.

Never heard of Donkey Basketball? It has been a popular fundraising event in small town America since the depression. Ride real, live donkeys and play basketball while raising money for your organization.

• The Players
o All participants must be at least 16 years of age. We recommend four teams with six to eight players per team. If you have a large number of people interested in participating you may have up to ten players per team. Do not exceed ten riders per team. Every participant must sign a waiver (furnished by Buckeye Donkey Ball) and attend a pre-game players meeting. At the pre-game meeting our representative will go over safety precautions and the rules of the game.

We suggest a four team mini-tournament with two preliminary games and a third championship game.

An exciting year at Hannan is being clebrating by students and the Mason County Board of Education at a BOE meetine Tuesday night.. Tuesday evening students ranging from grades 7 – 12 attended the Mason County Board Of Education meeting. For many of the students it was their first school board meeting.

President of the Board, Tom Nunnery, allowed Charles Mayes to lead the opening Pledge of Allegiance. He stated it was something he had not done in the twenty-one months that he has held office.

Senior Joel Weikle, from Wonderland Rock, performs from a mini-skit as board member Dale Shobe looks on.

A small skit from “Wonder Land” was performed by Joel Weikle, Caleb Shaw and Drake Grizzell to kick things off.

Dr. Capehart, Superintendent, laughed and cheered at the show.

A small slideshow to acknowledge the school’s achievements was prepared and shown during the meeting. Samantha Mayes and Alex Edmunds presented the slideshow to Dr. Capehart and the Board members. They were very impressed and glad to hear that things were going well at the school.

Dr. Karen Oldham, principal at Hannan and Vice-principal Amy Kammer took the chance to invite the Board members out to the Donkey Basketball game which will be held this Friday at 7 P.M. at Hannan in the gym. The senior class will be taking on the staff members.

Point Pleasant (WV) Register - Hannan students present accomplishments to Mason Co BOE: "POINT PLEASANT — During Tuesday evening’s Mason County Board of Education meeting, over 30 students from Hannan Jr/Sr High School gave a slide show presentation to Board members showing their year in celebrations.

The Board was updated on the press box which is in the process of being completed. This will provide a storage area for teams and coaches, as well as become a great asset for the football field.

From awards to organizations and new happenings at the school, Dr. Karen Oldham, principal and Mrs. Amy Kammer, assistant principal were highly complimented on their job well done for the many accomplishments received.

Several theatre students also presented a short skit of their play, “Wonderland Rock.” Board members were very impressed with the student’s acting abilities."

Hannan Band Performs at Regional Festival

On Thursday March 25th the Hannan Band traveled to Parkersburg to perform at the Region 2 Spring Performance Evaluation and Assessment. This event is often referred to as ratings since bands from the Ohio Valley area perform for three musical adjudicators who rate each band. Ratings range from I to V, with the highest score being a I. In addition to earning a rating, bands receive feedback on their strengths and weakness as well as suggestions for improvement. This year the Hannan Band earned a rating of II which reflects a performance of distinctive quality. In addition to earning this rating, the band also received many positive comments. Earning this rating is a positive step for the band as they continue the tremendous growth in their musical abilities. You can see the next band performance during the Hannan Spring Concert on May 4th at 6:00 pm in the Gymnasium, under the direction of Steven Campbell, Hannan High School & Ashton Elementary, Director of Music.

Since 1931, more than 15,000 West Virginia students have received the Golden Horseshoe Award in recognition of their knowledge of West Virginia history. Each year, thousands of eighth graders across the state take the Golden Horseshoe examination, and more than two hundred are inducted into the prestigious Golden Horseshoe Society. Ashley Flora, 8th Grade student of Mrs. Danita Shaw has carried on both the three year winning streak for Hannan and the personal Flora Family tradition of winning the Golden Horseshoe. Ashley's older brother, WVU Freshman, Patrick also won the Golden Horseshoe exam during his 8th grade year at Hannan.

As the end of the year draws near, it is almost prom time again! It was lights, runway and pose during Friday’s prom fashion show.

Upper classmen helped by decorating for the show, doing make-up and hair and helping the models before the show.

Victoria’s Prom and Bridal and Four Seasons Florist from Point Pleasant supplied dresses, tuxes and flowers for the event. Victoria’s brought twenty different dresses in all colors and designs.

Young ladies, ranging from 8th to 11th grade, acted as models for the show.

Four gentlemen also modeled tuxes from Victoria’s. Both businesses were giving discounts and taking deposits. Shoes, jewelry, corsages, and boutineers were being sold along with dresses and tuxes.

SPC James E. Anderson Jr. , has been in the army for 3 1/2 years and is currently stationed at Fort Campbell KY.

Although, Anderson has already served over a year in Iraq, in June of 2010 he will be deployed again; this time to Camp Leather Neck in Afganistan.

SPC Anderson graduated from Hannan High School in 2006. He eventually married his high school sweetheart, Cassi McDaniel, who is from Scott Depot.

They are the proud parents of a baby girl, Emma, borned in May 2009.

Anderson is an 88MIC in the army, which is a truck driver.

This deployment though, he will be classified as a 'gunner' on the truck.

The first picture, he is in his Class A uniform, and in the 2nd, he is with friends in Iraq.

Captain John D. Hagley is the 1999 valedictorian of Hannan High School. Following graduation from Hannan High School, John pursued his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio. Upon graduation from Cedarville in 2004, John earned his commission in the United States Air Force and was assigned to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station where he worked on our nation's family of space launch vehicles as an operations engineer, ensuring communications, navigation and positioning capabilities were provided to our military services worldwide. While stationed in Florida, John earned his Master of Science in Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Capt Hagley is currently on a special duty assignment at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama where he is an instructor at Air University, the Intellectual and Leadership Center of the Air Force. He is married to the former Monica Thomas of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee and together they have two boys (Jacob and Isaac) and are expecting a baby girl in February of 2010.

ASHTON — A straight “A” student at Hannan High School, Katy Stanley maintains an active life both at school and outside of the classroom with her ice hockey team.

For just the past year, Stanley, 18, has been traveling to South Charleston to put on her ice skates to play her favorite sport, hockey.

“I used to play on a younger team, but now I have moved up to the adult team,” Stanley said. “And I am really excited about it.”

At Hannan, Stanley is currently working as an office assistant for one semester.

“I enjoy helping others out,” Stanley said. “I mainly work on creating and posting flyers about upcoming events at the school.”

She also stated that she enjoys learning about the new technology in the office and assisting office personnel with software including Microsoft Publisher, which she uses frequently.

Dr. Karen Oldham, principal at HJSHS, said that Stanley is a phenomenal student.

“Katy goes above and beyond her duties as a student and is excellent at everything” Oldham said.

For the past two years, Stanley also has been a member of the National Honor Society, an elite group of students who are chosen based on their academics and character.

“In NHS, we have participated in numerous community service projects including a food drive here at the school,” Stanley said. “We also are planning an upcoming Math-A-Thon to take place next month.”

Another project came about during the Haiti tragedy. This group of students sent cards to the troops overseas to let them know they were not forgotten during the disaster.

This senior has additionally been involved with Student Council, serving as treasurer last year and is a former prom committee member.

Stanley commented that she is ready for her senior prom, themed “Black Tie Affair.”

A Promise Scholar and the recipient of the Michael Perry Scholarship, Stanley is looking forward to living on campus in Huntington and attending the College of Sciences at Marshall University.

“I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field,” Stanley said. “And since I am good at science and chemistry, I have decided to major in Pre-Pharmacy. I am definitely ready for it.”

After her four years in the undergraduate program, Stanley will attend medical school for another two years. Her ultimate goal is to become a laboratory pharmacist where she will work with chemicals and develop new drugs.

“I would love to be apart of someone’s healing process,” Stanley stated.

She chose Marshall for several reasons. Her mother is a graduate from there and Stanley said she also is a big Thundering Herd fan. MU is close to home and at the same time far enough way for her to be able to grow on her own.

As she reflects on her years spent at Hannan, Stanley said she will miss a lot of people.

“We’re basically like a big family,” Stanley said. “You build new friendships all during these six years and now everyone is going their separate ways ... it’s kind of sad.”

Stanley said her hobbies include hanging out with her friends, spending time in Teays Valley, and taking care of her animals. She recently added four hermit crabs to her already animal-populated home of a dog, two cats, two birds and four fish.

She is the daughter of Eugene and Linda Stanley of Apple Grove.

Seniors for “Senior Spotlight” are chosen from all three area high schools and are nominated by the principals.

The result of two years of planning, Crosslight of Hope became official in April after receiving their 501-C3 paperwork from the state office. This faith-based outreach program is now extending their arms and service to the communities in southern Mason County.

“We really felt the need to bring the ministry to the lower end of Mason County,” said board member Jeanie Nibert. “Hunger does exist in our area and we have felt a burden for some time for the increasing need to reach out in our community.”

One way volunteers are assisting is providing backpacks for children in need filled with fruit and other food items to be sent home on the weekend. The ministry also is planning a food pantry that will be open three days a week. The first pantry will start on April 23."

ASHTON — Whether he is leading his peers on the field or in the classroom, Shawn Kauffer of Hannan High School, is an outstanding member of the Class of 2010.

Kauffer, the 4.0 student from Milton, stays very active at Hannan with sports and academic organizations including being a member of the Future Business Leaders of America.

“It’s my first year in FBLA, and I really like it,” Kauffer said.

After being told by his friends and encouraged by a teacher, Kauffer decided to join the organization and he recently placed third in the county in the desktop publishing event.

Another first for Kauffer is being the senior class president. He said that he enjoys being able to organize the meetings and work on graduation plans.

“As president, I am in charge of making plans for our upcoming graduation, like picking our senior songs,” Kauffer said.

With graduation nearing, Kauffer is thinking about his future and what he will miss about the junior/senior high school.

“I like this small school,” Kauffer said. “Everyone knows everybody and I am going to miss seeing all of my friends.”

Kauffer said that he also will miss playing sports.

“You don’t have a chance to get hurt as much in baseball as you do football,” Kauffer said. “But I enjoyed the comradery that baseball offered.”

He played third base for two years on Hannan’s baseball team.

The 17-year old said he will he miss being a Wildcat football player the most.

“My favorite senior memory would have to be the last game,” said Kauffer, who was team captain during his senior season.

He went on to say that it was his best and worst memory, due to a knee injury that happened early on in the season, causing him to miss the first four games.

“I got to finish the season out and I am really going to miss football,” Kauffer said.

Kauffer has played the sport since he was in the seventh grade, and because of his size, he played center. He said that he was able to gain leadership skills and that by being captain, he also learned how to keep his teammates in line.

“It was fun and I enjoyed being captain,” Kauffer said.

While he will no longer suit up in pads and a helmet, Kauffer is looking forward to his college experience, especially his plan of study. Having always been interested in science and crime units, he will be attending Marshall University in the fall to major in either forensic science or engineering.

His interest came about by taking a forensic science class at Hannan. He said he would someday like to work for a crime unit.

When he isn’t thinking about his future, Kauffer volunteers his community. Sports continue to take the front seat in his activities, even beyond the doors of school.

Kauffer assists in coaching for the Biddy League Basketball League and really appreciates his time he is able to spend with young kids in sports.

“I like anything dealing with sports,” Kauffer admits. “Besides golf, I just can’t get into it.”

Other community involvement for Kauffer includes helping the elderly.

His hobbies include watching sports, hanging out with friends, riding 4-wheelers and dirt bikes, and spending time hunting and fishing.

He is the son of Terry and Lisa Kauffer of Milton.

NASA TOUCHES DOWN AT HANNAN

Jes White, a representative for NASA, made a visit to Hannan today. Mr. White is from NASA IV & V located in Fairmont, WV.
He brought NASA logo stickers to pass out to students.

The NASA Insignia, (shown on the left) reflects the history and tradition of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Designed in 1959 and more commonly referred to as the "meatball," the NASA Insignia contains the following elements: the sphere representing a planet, the stars representing space, the vector representing aeronautics, and the orbit representing space travel.

Jes White shows eighth graders how to make there own air propelled rocket as Eighth graders continue to explore force this week at Hannan. .

The rockets were made with construction paper and duct tape. The students had to roll the paper around a tube and tape it.

They then had to seal off one end of the tube. At the sealed end, the students created a point at make it look more realistically. Everyone went to the football field to fire their new rockets.

While some added too much air pressure and the rockets burst, others flew to the other side of the field. The longest rocket was shot by Allie Call and Laykin Stover.

Mr. Grady’s 2nd Annual Rocket launch is a soaring success!

The eighth graders are getting a new view on things. It’s spacey!

While Mr. Grady’s eighth grade science class explores the application on force in common objects, they built water propelled bottle rockets.

The class was divided into groups of four and each team was given a two liter bottle in which to make their rocket. They took a common two liter bottle and designed the outside however they thought it would best perform.

The bottles were then filled about half full with water and placed upside down on the launcher.

Air was pumped into the bottle and when the pressure was built up... a member of the team would release the bottle and send it soaring into the sky. It was a wet-n-wild trip!

ASHTON — It’s going to be a rocking time this Friday at Hannan Jr/Sr High School with the musical production of “Wonderland Rock” hitting the stage in the school’s gymnasium.

The musical version of “Alice in Wonderland” will soon be enjoyed by students at Ashton Elementary, middle school and high school students at Hannan and the public. Students involved in the theatre department are anxiously preparing for their big moment under the lights.

According to the director Donna Duke, who also is the writer of the play, nearly 30 students, including four seniors, are involved in the cast and crew for this event. Duke says that audiences can expect “joy, laughter and amazement” out of “Wonderland Rock.”

The storyline finds Alice searching for the secret about how she can become cool. Throughout the two act play, Alice runs into many individuals and characters in the woods. Duke added that the moral of the story is to just be happy with who you are.

Duke, an alumni of Hannan and a retired teacher, is a graduate of Marshall University where she was involved in the theatre department as the costume mistress. After meeting her husband, Stewart, the couple continued to be fully encompassed in theatre wherever they traveled. Around 10 years ago, Duke found herself back at her old stomping grounds where she generously supports all theatrical productions without any funding from the school or community. She also makes all of the costumes by hand.

“This is simply our way of giving back,” Duke said. “Theatre fosters independence, teamwork and most importantly, sense of confidence. My biggest goal that I try to instill in my students, is that they can do this.”

She said that the cast and crew have been practicing for six weeks.

“It is so great for these students to be a part of the production, whether they are on stage or backstage,” Duke said. “I truly believe that if they can do this, they can take on any test or attend college.”

The director, who is very proud of her actors, said that she loves bringing theatre to the rural area because it provides an opportunity for students to be involved in dancing and singing. She also noted that theatre has a place for everyone.

HJSHS Principal Karen Oldham commented that Duke is “truly an asset at Hannan.”

After the curtains close on Friday, students will have yet another performance, next Tuesday at the Lakin Correctional Facility. Duke said this will be the second group of theatre students that she has taken to Lakin.

During their visit on Tuesday, students will be provided a tour of the facility and lunch. Then, it’s showtime for the cast of “Wonderland Rock.”

The public performance will take place at 6 p.m., Friday, March 26, at the junior/senior high school’s gymnasium. Admission is $5 per person. Admission is free for students.

Prior to the play, a bean dinner will be held in conjunction with Hannan’s open house. The dinner is donation only.

FFA members all over WV have been very busy over the past few months preparing products for the state FFA Ham, Bacon, and Egg Show and Sale. The hams, bacon and eggs are the products of FFA members’ Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs. Dillon Griffith and Michael Bartram, both junior FFA members at Hannan High School, both entered a dozen eggs in the contest this year. Only the top 10 go into the sale. Dillon placed 5th out of 86 entries. This is the first time any Hannan FFA member has placed at this contest. Dillon would like to give a special thanks to Mason County Career Center FFA and Mason County Career Center Alumni for purchasing his eggs for $475.00.

REGIONAL CHEERLEADERS WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN ORLANDO

River Cities Gymnastics and Cheerleading team the Junior Rebels recently won a National Cheerleading Championship. National cheerleading competitions attract thousands of participants and spectators and that was certainly true for this year’s competition held in Florida.

Hannan’s Emma Jenkins (7th Grade) is a member of the Junior Rebel Squad National Champions!

The competition will be broadcast at the end of the month on ESPN.

Basketball Fundraiser
Hannan is hosting an Alumni-vs-Staff basketball game. The game will take place on Saturday March 27.

This year there will be 3 games,

                  GAME #1- girl’s only (Start time 5:30),
                  GAME   #2 - boy’s only even/odd (Start 6:15),
                  GAME   #3 - the winner of the girl’s game and the winner of the boy’s game will  form a co-ed team to take on the Hannan Staff (Start 7:45)

Last year playing time was equalized by randomly arranging players into groups within each team; these groups were rotated at predetermined breaks during the game. Since this method was successful, we will be using the same format this year. For boy’s only, even graduation years should wear blue (Preferably Navy) and odd graduation years should wear white.

Last year there were 30 alumni that showed up to play, therefore pre-registration is strongly encouraged. To pre-register and for additional information, contact Mike Wallace at Hannan JR/SR High (304 576-2571 or 304 743-3212) from 12:00-1:30 of by e-mail dwallace@access.k12.wv.us.

Spring is in the air and college decision deadlines are closing in on this year’s senior class. Higher Education has suffered massive cuts and have responded by raising tuition on college campuses across the nation.

With current governmental cuts and the sluggish economy; attracting new students to higher education is important to all post secondary institutions. Marshall University Recruitment Coordinator Amanda Means stopped by Hannan today to highlight what the local university offers.

All seniors were invited to a presentation by Ms. Means in Ms. Shaw’s 1st block civics class. Ms. Means travels all over West Virginia, Ohio and many other states.

While at Hannan, she handed out information about Marshall housing, financial aid and free applications. It was a great opportunity for students to get informed about MU and learn some of the steps in applying for college.

Out of the twenty-two students from Hannan who attended the 2010 Mason County Science Fair, seventeen received honors.

Division II

Heather Ellis wins 3rd place

In Division II, grades 7-8, teams, Hannan swept the awards winning first, second and third place. First place was Halley McCarty and Tuesday Page. The teams’ category is a composition of all eighteen categories in one.

Division III

In Division III, grades 9-12, the senior high students did very well overall. Two of the three pairs placed. Cindi Adkins, Jennifer Swan and Kendra Black place third in teams. Cody Cupp, Tuesday Allen and Jasmine Campbell placed second in the teams. Zachary Jenkins placed second in his category.

Megan Adkins takes first place

Hannan only had one first place student this year. Megan Adkins received first place in the physics and astronomy category.

Wahama High School brought almost 100 students, but per capita Hannan had more winners.

The state science fair will be held on March 26-27 at Fairmont State University. Registration for the state fair is March 12.

New wellness center at HHS receives donations

ASHTON — Hannan Junior/Senior High School is continuing to expand and offer more for its students, including the recent addition of an athletic facility that will serve not only students, staff and faculty, but also the local community. Pleasant Valley Hospital donated $9,000 worth of fitness equipment to the new facility.

“During our renovation project, we decided to donate equipment that was still in excellent condition to a local school,” said Amy Leach, PVH director of marketing and public relations. “And Hannan was the school we chose.”

Leach added that the PVH-HealthCare of Gallipolis Ferry is just another way in which the hospital strives to give back to the community.

“We want to help out and give back to a community that is so loyal to us,” Leach said.

She continued to say that Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High School also received a leg press. Wahama Junior/Senior High School looked at the equipment, but did not need any of the items.

Reportedly, the 12 pieces of equipment were greatly appreciated by everyone at HHS. American Electric Power-River Operations, also have donated three pieces of fitness equipment, including a NordicTrack.

Amy Kammer, vice principal at HHS, has been instrumental in making the facility more available to the community. She is currently looking into grants that can help fund after school and weekend availability.

“We are not only benefiting the students, but hopefully, the community as well,” Kammer said.

Brian Booth, a faculty member, said all of the students and faculty are excited about the fitness center.
“We really appreciate what Pleasant Valley Hospital and AEP has done for us,” Booth said. “I see students striving to be a better Wildcat and in years to come, the fitness center will be a great recruiting tool for Hannan.”
According to Leach, because of the dedication of the staff and faculty at HHS, more things are being accomplished.

“You are hearing more and more about Hannan High School because of what the faculty is doing for their students,” Leach said. “They have a very professional staff.”

Hannan principal Karen Oldham said that since the opening of the facility with its new equipment two days ago, students have been pouring through the doors.

“We have 240 students enrolled here (Hannan),” Oldham said. “And for the first two evenings, we had 40 plus students utilizing the fitness center.”

During after-school hours, the athletic facility is open to sports teams and coaches. However, it also has been open in the early morning hours.

Oldham said that even the cooks at the school enjoy an early morning workout before their work day starts.

“The bottom line is that we are benefiting our students,” Kammer said.

Oldham agreed, stating that ‘academics is a stronghold that we are continuing to improve, but we also are focused on the students’ physical and emotional well-being.”
Jason Shain of Shain’s Custom Signs based out of Racine, Ohio, also will be providing the school with a huge wildcat sign to be placed on the outside of the fitness center.

The improvements and upgrades don’t stop with the fitness center. Hannan also is receiving support from delegates such as Mike Hall and Patti Schoen.

According to Oldham, the delegates are committed to helping improve the junior/senior high school, both inside and out.

The excited principal named off many updates that are in plan to take place including a new outside basketball court with an interchangeable tennis net, an outdoor trail around the school’s pond, and possibly a track.

“Wayne Richardson, our head coach for basketball, deserves recognition,” Oldham said. “He has been wonderful at getting our grants started for our sports department.”

Schoen’s plans include providing each classroom at HHS with additional laptops for the students’ needs. This would take at $15,000-$20,000 grant.

ASHTON — Kayla DeMaria, a senior at Hannan High School, has a passion to raise awareness about suicide and to help others.

DeMaria stated that she would love to someday work for the non-profit organization, “To Write Love On Her Arms.” Her interest in this organization stems from a friend’s suicide.

Another way in which DeMaria assists in her community is by volunteering her time in the summer to work at a golf course.

“All of the money raised during the summer goes to the American Heart Association,” DeMaria stated.

When she isn’t busy giving back or planning ways to change people’s lives, DeMaria is preparing for graduation along with the rest of the Class of 2010 and looking ahead to her future.

One of her favorite memories thus far during her senior year is Homecoming. That may be because DeMaria was chosen as one of the Homecoming attendants during her senior year, or possibly because of the fun and eventful “Spirit Week” that took place at HHS.

Either way, DeMaria is an student with an ambition to succeed in life.

For three years, this 18-year old worked hard to be a leader in the Student Council Organization. By being in charge during her junior year and assisting with fundraisers, she and other group members were able to raise money for prom and other activities to be enjoyed by the entire school.

“I enjoyed Student Council,” DeMaria explained. “But this year, I am just trying to focus on my schoolwork.”

And with four Marshall University classes, she has to dedicate much of her time to excel in the classes she takes at the Mid-Ohio Valley Center and at HHS.

“These classes are much more advanced than my normal high school classes,” DeMaria said.

DeMaria said that a psychology class has captured her interest and inspired her to pursue a career.

“I have always been interested in how the mind works,” DeMaria said.

Her future plans involve attending Marshall University to double major in forensic science and psychology.

“I think both of these areas of study are interesting and I want to mix the two up so I can pursue a career as a forensic psychologist,” DeMaria said.

DeMaria plans to live in the campus dorms in Huntington with her best friend and said she is looking forward to it. Her sister, Marissa, already is a student at Marshall.

“It’s a whole different ball game,” DeMaria said. “Your deciding your future, and it’s a big decision.”

Originally from Elmira, N.Y., one of her hobbies include traveling. DeMaria added that she also loves going to concerts.

She is the daughter of James and Brenda DeMaria of Milton.

Hannan FFA educates third graders at Ashton Elementary

ASHTON — Throughout the week, Mason County FFA students have been spreading the word about the organization and promoting National FFA Week.

Hannan High School FFA members celebrated each day by going to school dressed up to support FFA. From plaid to boots, to the official FFA colors of “national blue and corn gold,” students had fun with their agricultural-related get ups.

According to Jenna Meeks, an Agriculture Education Instructor and the Hannan FFA Advisor, the students worked hard to get the word out about FFA.

Teachers and staff members at HHS also enjoyed a different treat each day that was delivered by the FFA students.
But students at Ashton Elementary received an even bigger treat from the FFA chapter on Friday morning.

Four lessons were presented to each third grade class. They included food products in their presentations and related them to agriculture education.

For example, with the apple lesson, Hannan students asked the third graders how much of the earth did they think produced food. With the corn lesson, students witnessed first hand what a corn kettle looks like and all the parts that make up the tiny seed.

Third graders also enjoyed a pizza and ice cream lesson. For those lessons, they learned about where the ingredients come from.

Those educating Mr. Green’s third grade class included HHS FFA Secretary Abigail Bush, Cassie Parsons, Casey Rowe, and Austin Akers. Mrs. Byus’ students enjoyed the lessons with HHS FFA Reporter Daniel Black, Tiffany Adkins, Dakota Campbell, and Shelbie Waugh. And HHS FFA President Alex Facemyer, HHS FFA Treasurer Zac Jenkins, HHS FFA Sentinel Kaitlynn Hughes, Colt Campbell, and Brad Fannin, provided a fun experience for those in Mrs. Withers’ third grade classroom.

“We are providing fun and exciting lessons to these young students,” Meeks said. “They are learning about the dairy industry and how to dissect a corn kettle through these lessons, as well as enjoying healthy food.”

New Kiln

Hannan High School Art classes will soon enjoy pottery classes with the new kiln recently installed. Art teacher Brianne Solomon (who is currently on leave) is excited about the new kiln and making pottery with her students. AEP River Operations delivered NordicTrack equipment today. This week Runner's World, the worldwide authority on running information, named a NordicTrack treadmill the "Biggest Bang for the Buck" in its February 2010 issue featuring treadmill reviews.

The magazine also highlighted the overall benefits of treadmill training, including incline training, cushioning that protects knee and hip joints, and maintaining a consistent pace because of the motorized tread belt.

ASHTON — Brian Chapman is described as someone who goes “above and beyond the call of duty” at Hannan High School. And with all that he is involved in, this graduating senior still finds time to lend a helping hand.

Chapman, 19, a student in the special education program at HHS, spends most of his day working outside the school in the Work-Based Learning Program. This program gives students the opportunity to gain experience needed to work in jobs upon graduation.

Chapman is planning on continue his job at McDonald’s in Milton once he has completed his studies at the high school.

“Everyone is really nice at work,” Chapman said. “I enjoy it because it’s not too hard.”

He said that some of his job duties include cleaning and cooking, while being supervised.

Foodland of Milton is also a partner in the program and Chapman worked there, too, bagging groceries for customers and occasionally helping them to their vehicles.

Back at Hannan, Chapman finds ways to assist others at the school. He said he is willing to help because he wants to give back to a school that has given him so much.

“We have two really nice principals who have given us a courtyard,” Chapman said. “They are also working on getting us a new baseball field.”

That new field may not be completed for Chapman’s last season on the team, but he is still looking forward to playing.

“I am getting better at the game,” Chapman said. “I just play wherever the coach needs me.”
This rightfielder said he enjoys the game, whether his team wins or loses, and gave praise to the team’s coach, Mr. Perry, for doing a great job.

While he is thankful for the staff and faculty at HHS, many of them, including principal Dr. Karen Oldham, highly compliments Chapman’s work and enthusiasm.

“Brian is a role model for all of our students,” Oldham said. “He truly is always helping someone, whether it is a fellow student or member of our staff.”

When he finds the time in between classes and work, Chapman enjoys the outdoors, especially hunting.

He describes himself as being a coon hunter, but he also likes to hunt deer. Chapman said his dad taught him how to hunt.
This avid sportsman also enjoys working on the family farm and helping his “PawPaw” with the cows and chickens.

Chapman is the son of Wesley and Donna Chapman of Milton.

Once again Hannan Alumnus and current Hannan Athletic Director Charlie Hagley will be helping announce tonight’s televised Marshall Basketball game for the Thundering Herd/ISP network. Saturday night (TONIGHT) Marshall University hosts East Carolina at the Cam Henderson Center.

The game will be televised on the Thundering Herd/ISP Network. The network is comprised of WSAZ in Huntington/Charleston, WTAP in Parkersburg, and WITN in Greeville, N.C.

WSAZ Television 3 Sports Director Keith Morehouse will do the play-by-play with Charlie handling the color commentary.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT - Megan Adkins – Hannan High School

ASHTON — Whether she is designing signs, editing page layouts for the yearbook, or busy being in charge of ‘The Paw Print’, Megan Adkins keeps active at Hannan High School, especially during her final year as a Wildcat.

Adkins claims that has a passion for graphic design. The senior became interested in this subject last year when she served as co-editor of the high school yearbook.

“I love graphic design,” Adkins said. “I like working on ads and getting input from others.”

In her class, Adkins said she has learned a lot about what graphic design is and says she enjoys the challenge that it sometimes brings. She is currently the editor for the yearbook.

Another class that Adkins enjoys and one that she has taken the lead role in, is the school’s newspaper, ‘The Paw Print’. The paper, which comes out monthly, will begin this month and Adkins said the two go hand-in-hand, however, there are far more deadlines with the newspaper. She said she is looking forward to starting from scratch on this project.

Adkins said that the classes’ advisor, Shirley ‘Señora’ Gue, really has helped make graphic design fun for her and her classmates.

But its not all interviews and selling ads for this teenager, Adkins also has been a Varsity Volleyball player at HHS for four years.

She served as Co-Captain her senior year, and even though she suffered from a severely sprained ankle, she finished out the season and only missed one game.

Her favorite part of the sport?

“I love serving,” Adkins stated. “We were two points from serving in our final game, and we lost the serve.”

She said she also enjoyed traveling to the different schools with the Lady Wildcat volleyball team.

Other school activities and honors for Adkins include National Honor Society, Marshall University dual-credit classes, Science Bowl, school and county Social Studies and Science fairs, and the high school play.

“I am very excited about my first play,” Adkins said. “I went to just help with the props and I ended up reading lines and hanging out with other students.”

Her role happens to be the Duchess in a 50s style rock and roll version of Alice in Wonderland. Not only will the high school students be involved, but Ashton Elementary kids will take part in this production.

Another event that Adkins is busily preparing for is the Science Bowl that will be held in Morgantown. Adkins in one of five students from HHS that was hand chosen by Mr. Grady; a science teacher at the school. She said that she is studying and hopes to do well against other students from other schools that she will be competing against.

Science is another subject that this 17-year old is interested in. For her fair project this year, Adkins built an air compulsion cannon that shoots marbles at a high pressure.

“I prefer the Science fair over the Social Studies fair,” Adkins said. “I am very hands on and I enjoy building and performing experiments.”

Adkins also is a Promise Scholar and was recipient of the Wendy’s Heisman Award this year. That award was based on athletics, academics and community involvement.

And as for her volunteerism, Adkins said that she stays busy with mostly high school activities but she always finds the time to lend a helping hand during the Vacation Bible School held at her church, Barton Chapel Church.

When she does find time to relax, Adkins can be found playing on her computer at home with photo editing software, listening to different types of music, and playing with her two pugs, Mr. Puggles and Coco.

As the countdown for graduation continues, Adkins reflects on her years at Hannan as being memorable.

“I like Hannan because it is a close-knit community where everyone is friends,” Adkins said. “There also is a close connection between the students and staff.”

As for her favorite senior memory, Spirit Week would have to be at the top of her list.

“I got to act like I never would on a normal day,” Adkins said. “It’s a time where everyone can dress up and goof off.”

The Class of 2010 won the Spirit Stick for the week and Adkins said that meant a lot to her classmates. All of the seniors also had matching shirts for the Blue/White Day, which was Adkins’ favorite day out of the week.

This fall, Adkins will be pursuing her graphic design degree at Marshall University.

She is the daughter of Carl and Christine Adkins of Ashton.

Mason County BOE $2.8 million in debt

POINT PLEASANT — The Mason County Board of Education is in hot water due to an overwhelming shortfall in the school district’s general expense fund. The board is currently $2,843,343 in debt.

According to the financial statement audit, the Mason County Board of Education incurred expenditures and/or obligations in the general fund that caused a negative balance for the previous fiscal year, which ended on June 30, 2009. Specifically, the board over expended the money in the capital projects fund, but it was required that the deficit be transferred to the general expense fund.

According to Mason County Schools Superintendent Dr. Bill Capehart, who took office on July 1, 2009, following the end of the fiscal year, the district must come up with an approved plan of action to clear the deficit. Go to Point Pleasant Register to finish reading the story.
